End of Google Notebook?

Hi,

The attached from Lifehacker leads me to say that I'd happily switch to Zoho Notebook (already with Zoho docs and others) if it were just a little more user-friendly/adaptable.

Rick,

Thank you for your interest. Can you please expand on what you'd like to see in Zoho Notebook? Any specifics will be useful.

Raju,

It may be my own incompetence but I don't like the narrowness of the box in which I have to key the notes

I'm in the same boat -- looking to move away from Google Notebook. The only thing that I would really like to see is having the firefox plugin add new clips before existing ones -- ie, I want reverse chronological order. I've looked but I don't see any sort of option for enabling that type of behavior.

I share a a Google Notebook amongst friends essentially as my own personal news filter (or rather, I'm the filter for them -- lazy people!). Going in and creating a new daily notebook (or any other manually created sense of chronology) is something I'm too lazy to do.. :)

Chris,

This functionality is now available in Zoho Notebook with our new plugin (beta). The items will be ordered in reverse (latest first). I provided more details on this below (in this thread).

Chris,

This is definitely coming. A new plug-in is in the works along with a new page type for research. A combination of these will meet your needs.

Stay tuned.

Any way to import from Google Notebook?

Re: Re: End of Google Notebook?

I too would like to import from Google notebook. But also would like more information on this "new plugin" I cannot get the existing plugin to install despite several attempts. I never considered the fact that Google would pull the plug so now I'm a little skeptical about any online notebook. Is there an offline client that I can sync with or something.

I still prefer the online option because (well atleast with GNotebook) I could install the plugin on multiple computers and have instant access pretty much anywhere I went. But now it would be nice if I could have a copy on my computer as backup.

No import option is available currently. We are looking at the option of providing some kind of alternative. Google Notebook has an option to export the Notebook in ATOM format. With today's update, we understand ATOM format. We are looking to see if we can use this as a format to import your notebooks. We will look into this closely and will try to come up with a solution.

I just signed up to Zoho to convert my Google Notebooks. Used the Atom export feature, and seems to work fine. What I miss are the dates of entry, however. In Notebook, the entry date is associated with each post, but I see no dates in the Zoho notebook entries. Would this be a new feature, or is there an option I need to turn on?

@zenmasta The new plugin is in the final stages of development. It should be available soon. Here is a screenshot on how it looks. We'll provide more info on this as it is ready.

Thanks Raju, The plugin is great. What I just love about cloud notebooks (especially with a plugin) is I can easily book mark stuff or jot down ideas and pretty much instantly have access to them anywhere I go.

I can see already that it has many more features than Google. And I look forward to testing the import when you guys get to that.

It might be nice if the plugin had a button for when you already have the notebook open you can just click the "add page" and or "make page from current website" and it would work just like right click, add to zohonotebook, but just one click of course just one click. This is kind of like the "clip" button on the google notebook plugin where it book marks the page and pastes any highlighted text.

Awesome stuff.

I've used Yahoo Notepad and Protopage to keep notes that are accessible to me from anywhere.  The most critical reason I wanted to get away from them is because I have no way of backing up my work.

I was thrilled when I found out Google Notebook had an XML export function.  I just need to be able to save text.  Other data would be nice (pics, html, etc) but having a local backup of my text info is absolutely critical to me.

It sounds like Google Notebook development has stopped but the app should stay available at least for now.  I want to find a new home for my online notes anyway.  I've just started exploring Zoho but if I can do an XML dump of my notes here, I'm likely to stick around.

@flabbycat

We are looking to provide an import option for importing your Google Notebooks to Zoho Notebook. We will let you know how that goes in the next 2-3 days. We will have some kind of a solution for this.

Thanks for the quick response.

An import feature would be great.

However, my concern is with backing up information I put into Zoho.  I need to be able to export my data from Zoho.

We just added an import feature. More details are available at the end of the post.

Currently we have an MHTML export. We plan to expand this to other formats as well.

Raju,

I found mhtml export and it looks like it will do what I need.

Thanks for taking the time to point me in the right direction.

If you are a Google Notebook user, we added some new features that might be helpful.

New Page Type

We added a new page type that is text only and goes top down. You can find 'Add Text Page' on the top left to add this page type. This follows a similar model as Google Notebook where the text content can only be ordered vertically and is text only. Google Notebook users might find this useful.

New Plug-in

Here is the link to the early access of our new Plugin.
http://notebook.zoho.com/nb/ext/index.html

If you use this plugin to grab the content, it uses the 'Text Page' type mentioned above as the default format for arranging content. You can also view your content within the plugin. Note that the plugin doesn't work when you have Zoho Notebook tab open in your browser.

We hope these two features will be useful for Google Notebook users.

We are working on importing Google Notebook. We will let you know how that goes.

Gentlemen,

The first version of Google Notebook import is ready.

Check out http://notebook.zoho.com/nb/jsp/importgoogle.jsp

It is REALLY simple. You can import ALL your Google Notebooks in less than 2 minutes with 3 easy steps.

  • Install our new Firefox plug-in.
  • Login to Google and Zoho
  • Type in this URL in another tab in your browser and click on 'Start' - chrome://zoho-notebook/content/g2z.html

That's it. You should see all your Google Notebooks appear in Zoho Notebook.

This is the first version and it will get better over time. Please do give this a try and let us know what you guys think.

Looking forward to your feedback.

Wow!

I imported my (mostly text) notes using the plugin and I haven't found any problems with them at all.
If I see anything unexpected, I'll let you know.

Thanks!

the mhtml export is good but I'd love to see an XML export also.

I just imported all my notebooks too and it worked great.

Just a couple of issues:
I can't find how to sort the text boxes. I want to see the most recent first (and by first I mean at the top of the list)
When you have a lot of text boxes on a page it can take quiet sometime to load. On google notebook it would only load the first I don't know, maybe 5 or 6 and then if you scrolled down it would begin to load more. Zoho should implement something like this. Some of my notebooks have a lot of stuff in them so it takes about 10 seconds before it loads.

I've just started using Zoho Notebook as Google has (very annoyingly) stopped developing Notebook.

Very impressed so far with Zoho; I like the fact you've made the migration from Google so easy - both in importing my Google data (which seems to have worked seamlessly) and making the Firefox plugin very easy to use (ie similar to the Google one....)

One feature either I can't find or not yet available is ability to easily search my notebooks. This is pretty vital in my mind, being able to easily search across notebooks makes the whole online notebook thing a extremely powerful productivity tool (and distinct from just being a glorified collection of documents).

Is this something you are developing?

I imported all my notes into the wrong Zoho account, so I want to move them.  I've exported them as .mht, but how can I import them back into my other Zoho account?  Am I missing something?

We don't have
.MHT import  functionality. Currently there is no other than importing from google to your other account.

Search is one major functionality, we are working on. There is some unexpected delay on this, we hope to roll it out soon.

A good and fast search function is absolutely vital for real-world online notebook use. When that is working, your Notebook will be very promising! Thanks.

Hi,
when will it be possible to share a book w/ a group? Today you can only with specific users by providing email addresses. It would be great to have Notebook (and not Notes only) integrated w/ Groups too.
thx,
Paolo

Regarding ZOHO Notebook Firefox Plugin.

This plug-in works, at least for me, very good. A nice add-on would be to link it with Zoho Mail, so that new email would also be shown. Since we are logged in, so this could be nice.
